Murphysboro High School Roof Collapses

Murphysboro High School administrators and teachers will have to do some rearranging, after the roof collapsed Monday morning into the school's auditorium.
District Superintendent Chris Grode says he's still not sure how long the repairs to the auditorium will take - but he says they'll do what they can to keep music and arts classes and events on track during that time.

"At this point in time, we do plan to have a musical - it just might not be at the high school. It might be at the middle school, it might be somewhere else, I don't know. We have a choir class that was scheduled to be in the auditorium every day, we plan to relocate that class."

Grode says a routine HVAC inspection found the roof was sinking over the auditorium, so crews worked to remove the HVAC unit from that area and then put tarps and pumps on the roof to try to prevent a collapse. But he says heavy rains Monday morning proved too much, and the roof caved in - leaving duct work and other debris in the auditorium and a hole in the roof.

The damage has been turned in to the school district's insurance company, and crews are expected throughout this week to assess the damage and begin working on repairs.
