WSIU Launches New Season of Community Cinema This Saturday

Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, camera crews, and photographers are invited to cover the launch of a third season of Community Cinema, a series of free public screenings and discussion of films presented by the SIU Carbondale College of Mass Communication and Media Arts (MCMA), WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media arm of SIU Carbondale, and the Carbondale Public Library. The film series kicks off at the library this Saturday, September 28 at 2:30pm with the film The Graduates.

The Graduates explores the roots of the Latino dropout crisis through the eyes of six inspiring students from across the United States. The students offer a first-person perspective on the challenges facing many Latino high school students, including over-crowded schools, crime-ridden neighborhoods, teen pregnancy, and pressure to drop out of school to contribute to family finances.

Dan Elgin, Community Counselor and SIU alumnus, and Dr. Danielle Soto, Assistant Professor, SIU Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice, will lead a discussion after the film.

MCMA, WSIU Public Broadcasting, and the Carbondale Public Library will host Community Cinema screenings at the library at 2:30pm on the last Saturday of each month through May 2014, with the exception of November, December, and January. The remaining schedule includes The State of Arizona (October 26), Las Marthas (February 22), The Trials of Muhammad Ali (March 29), Medora (April 26), and The New Black (May 31).

For more information about WSIU's Community Cinema screenings, contact Deborah Tudor, Associate Dean of the SIU Carbondale College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, at (618) 453-4308 or dtudor@siu.edu. Visit our local Community Cinema website at www.wsiu.org/communitycinema.
