City leaders in Marion have taken the first step to revitalize the downtown area.
The Marion City Council passed an engineering agreement to begin redeveloping parts of the city.
After the surveying is finished work plans will be put out for bidding and work will begin.
Mayor Mike Absher says it has been around 50 years since the town square has had major work done to it and the redesign will allow space for hosting events.
"There’s actually quite a lot of space out there by the clock tower it’s just filled in right now by these geometric flower boxes and things which are quite dated at this point and those things need to come out, it’s just going to leave us with enormous amount of usable space out there in the center of our town.”
Other plans include defining traffic flow around the square, repaving and lighting parking lots and adding landscaping. For WSIU I’m Benjy Jeffords
