The John A. Logan College Board of Trustees has approved a three-tiered approach to deal with a dwindling source of funds.
Faced with a $3.6 million budget shortfall, Logan President Mike Dreith says the board Tuesday night approved a 10% tuition hike for the next academic year, along with a half-million dollars in savings related to attrition.
"Positions we will not fill going into next year. And we're trying to incentivize more people to take that route by having a retirement package that incentivizes their retirements now so that we can build that savings into next year's budget."
The board will consider some other deficit-reduction proposals in the coming months. They include a 22% across-the-board decrease in discretionary spending, eliminating the golf program after the 2015-16 season and a $100,000 reduction in scholarships and tuition waivers.
The board's next meeting is scheduled for March 24th. But, Dreith says the trustees won't likely vote on the other proposed cuts until the April meeting.
