A Jackson County jury returned guilty verdicts on a Carbondale man for his involvement in a shooting incident last summer.

The Jackson County State's Attorney says the jury convicted 32-year-old Dennis Higgins, Jr. on Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.
The charges against Higgins stem from a July 2019 shooting incident at The Fields apartment complex in Carbondale. Higgins was one of two men who engaged in a shootout at the complex just before midnight. He and the other man shot at one another after a verbal altercation in the middle of the street.

The events were captured on high-definition video surveillance cameras installed by the management of The Fields over the summer.

Because of his prior criminal history, Higgins faces the potential for enhanced sentences on both counts ranging from six to 14 years in prison.
