Illinois Senators have voted to change how Illinois funds schools.
The new method would direct more money to needy districts. But ultimately, that would come at the expense of wealthier ones.
Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) says his plan is about equity.
"This ought not be a Democrat or Republican issue. This should be a conversation about how we change the system, that has been just, very difficult on downstate districts that have seen a growth in poverty, unchecked, unchecked by state government."
But Republicans call it a bailout for Chicago schools - which would also stand to receive more money from the state under the revised method.
It's not just Governor Bruce Rauner and GOP lawmakers who are throwing cold water on the plan.
Indications are that Democrats -- who control the Illinois House -- will bottle it up.
