An Illinois House committee has voted to ban drivers from talking on their cell phones unless they are using a hands free device.
Under the bill violators would face a 75-dollar fine. The legislation is part of a growing movement to address distracted driving. But Representative Dennis Reboletti, a Republican from Elmhurst, is skeptical. He says education is crucial and believes the Secretary of State is already doing his part to inform the public of the risks of driving while distracted. Reboletti says people can make their own decision as to what's best for the safety when they're driving. He calls the bill a work in progress. The measure moves to the House floor for consideration.
At least one study found getting cell phones out of motorists' hands may do little to improve safety. The non-profit Highway Loss Data Institute found no evidence vehicle crashes went down after similar laws took effect. The House committee also approved a ban on texting while bicycling.
The legislation is HB 3970
