One Illinois university is now asking students for money that was slated to be covered by a state grant.
Last fall, Illinois Tech - formerly known as IIT- told students who qualified for MAP grants - a need-based scholarship - that the school would temporarily credit the grants to their student accounts.
This week, the school informed students that with no end in sight to the state's budget mess, those credits are being rescinded. That means holds on student accounts, which will need to be cleared up before students can register for fall classes.
Illinois Tech is offering loans to cover the balance.
