I-LAW Hosts Public Awareness Forum

Local government, education and business leaders say Illinois needs to reduce frivolous lawsuits to help spur economic growth.
Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch hosted a public forum Tuesday in Marion to discuss the adverse impact of lawsuit abuse on job creation, municipal services and schools. The forum is the first stop in Illinois of the national "Create Jobs, Not Lawsuits" public awareness tour that is taking place in states all across the country throughout 2012. Southern Illinois was chosen for the first stop in Illinois due to the region's long history as a hotbed for frivolous litigation. I-LAW executive director Travis Akin says lawsuit abuse in places such as Madison, St. Clair and Cook counties drives up the costs for everyone in Illinois.  Akin says other Midwestern states, such as Wisconsin and Minnesota, have moved to makes their states more conducive to job creation by passing their own lawsuit reform packages. He's urging Illinoisans to put pressure on lawmakers to pass their own set of reforms.
