Homicide Investigation Underway at Jackson County Jail (Update 1 pm)

police

The Jackson County coroner has identified the inmate found dead Thursday morning in his cell at the Jackson County Jail.
Coroner Tom Kupferer says he is 31-year-old Collin Kotlarz, originally from Waverly, Tennessee.

Illinois State Police have been called to investigate what authorities are calling a homicide after Kotlarz was found dead in his cell around 6:45 Thursday morning during a routine check.

Investigators say the other inmate housed in that cell was moved to isolation as the authorities look into what happened, and the jail was put on lockdown.

In addition, the Jackson County State's Attorney's Office has already been recused in the case - the State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor's Office will handle the case.  According to court records, Union County charged Kotlarz with two counts of aggravated DUI in March.
