Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar says he is "shocked" that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is facing a federal indictment.
The U.S. Attorney in Chicago is alleging Hastert hid cash withdrawals used to cover up past misdeeds.
Edgar and Hastert worked together in Springfield and Washington.
"Denny Hastert would be the last person I would think would be indicted, I've always known him to be a person of the highest integrity."
Edgar points out it is an indictment and not a conviction.
Prosecutors aren't saying what Hastert was allegedly trying to cover up.
Attorneys for Hastert were unavailable to comment.
