Harrisburg Storm Recovery Underway

The recovery process is underway in Harrisburg following Wednesday morning's tornado that resulted in major damage and loss of life.

The Saline County Sheriff's office has now revised the death toll.  County Officials report 6-people are dead.  Four females and two males.  All of the victims are adults.  County authorities are not releasing any additional information on the deceased.  Storm related injuries are estimated to be more than 100. Storm victims were also transported to hospitals in Williamson County for treatment.  Sheriff's officials report more than 200 homes damaged or destroyed in Harrisburg along with 25 businesses.

Governor Pat Quinn has issued a disaster proclamation.  Harrisburg officials say they understand the region's desire to help.  The city has set up a volunteer hotline for anyone interested in helping with the recovery effort.  The phone numbers is 618-252-3732.   The Red Cross has a relief center up and operational.  Harrisburg is also requiring any service or trade company wanting to operating in the City to register for a permit.

Ameren Illinois spokesman Leigh Morris says they are still assessing the damage. Ameren has activated its Emergency Operations Center.  Morris says crews report significant destruction in the Harrisburg area where the storm hit.  He says their primary concern is public safety.  If you suspect a power line is down or if there is a gas leak you can call Ameren's hotline at 800-755-5000 or call 9-1-1.   Morris also warns people who may be hooking up generators to their homes to follow all safety procedures.  Ameren estimates it will be Friday before electrical service is fully restored.

Saline County authorities say a 6:00 pm to 6:00 am curfew will be enforced beginning Wednesday night.
