Carbondale, IL – Governor Rod Blagojevich is putting a halt to projects across the state due the lack of a balanced budget for this fiscal year.
Dozens of projects are being stopped... some in the planning stages and others in the midst of construction or repair.
Locally, emergency roof repairs at the Vandalia and Vienna Correctional Centers have stopped. Officials say leaks will continue there until the repairs can be made.
Also, a bridge replacement project in Carlyle Fish and Wildlife Area in Fayette County is on hold, and upgrades at the Lincoln Log Cabin Historic Site and firing ranges at three state police district headquarters in southern Illinois will be idled.
Governor Blagojevich has given lawmakers until the middle of next week to plug a nearly $2 billion hole in the budget. It's still unclear if the legislature will go back into session to fix the problem.
