Government shutdown prevents SIU student from enrolling in classes

File provided by Sloan Marion

While the government remained closed today, Commuincation Design Senior Sloan Marion ended his first week back at Southern Illinios University Carbondale unable to officially enroll due to the shutdown.

Marion says his predicament began when the university requested a tax transcript to verify his finacial aid.

"In order to get a tax transcript, you have to get those through the IRS. Now with the government shutdown, you can't get anything from the IRS," Marion says.

That's because the IRS is closed, as well as many other federal agencies during the shutdown.

Marion says in the beginning SIU would not accept tax returns, but as the spring semester came closer they accepted 10-40 tax returns. Marion is now on track to be enrolled for his last semester at the university, but until he is officially enrolled he is barred from using student resources or working his two student work jobs.

"This stuff lowered my morale for school," Marion says. "All the minut things that you may not think about is being affected by the government's inability to work and handle things in a mature way."

Marion says while he's waiting to go back to his student jobs he has been advertising his design work.
