A map shows earthquakes (circles) of the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones. Red circles indicate earthquakes that occurred from 1974 to 2002 with magnitudes larger than 2.5. Green circles denote quakes before 1974.

Wednesday is the 206th anniversary of a major earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging people to prepare for earthquakes.
If a quake hits...I-EMA spokesperson Patti Thompson says you should drop to the floor...take cover under a sturdy desk or table...hold on to the furniture and move with it until the shaking ends.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is urging the public to learn about earthquake safety no matter where they live.

Illinois is home to two seismic zones in southern Illinois...and a quake in those areas could be felt statewide.
