Effingham Man Charged in Shooting

An Effingham man who lied to police about being shot while jogging before admitting he shot himself has been charged with filing a false police report and illegally possessing a firearm.

The Effingham Daily News reports a grand jury on Wednesday indicted 21-year-old David A. Koester on three felony counts: disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm. Koester's initial report triggered a hunt for a gunman.

Koester had said he'd been shot in the leg while running with his dog in the Little Wabash River bottoms on Dec. 19. Days later he acknowledged that he'd lied about shooting himself because he did not have a Firearm Owner Identification Card.

Koester couldn't be reached for comment Thursday, but previously admitted he lied and said the shooting was an accident.
