As thousands of students begin their fall semester at SIU Carbondale Monday, administrators are trying to take stock - even though official numbers are still a ways off.
SIU President Randy Dunn has said for months he expects enrollment to be flat. Monday on WSIU InFocus with Jennifer Fuller, Dunn says those estimates may dip a bit.
"I anticipate at this point - and it's too early to say for sure - I anticipate we're going to be down some. How much that will be, we're still taking a look right now."
Dunn says he's not looking at a slight drop in enrollment as a negative - he says the school was more strategic in the students it accepted this year, in an attempt to help boost retention efforts.
Official ten-day numbers will be released after Labor Day.
