Last week's agreement on a stop-gap budget for the state doesn't mean SIU Carbondale is out of the woods. The school's administration says it will have to make further cuts.
In a message to the campus, Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell on Tuesday announced 15 non-tenure track faculty will not return this fall, and two civil service employees will be laid off. In addition, about a dozen non-tenure track faculty members will have reduced assignments in the coming academic year.
Colwell says the campus will cut spending by $21 million, on top of more than $13 million in reductions made during last fiscal year.
Southern Region Early Childhood program preschool teachers also received layoff notices, but Colwell says many of them will likely be called back because of last week's agreement in Springfield.
Campus departments were all asked to identify ways to save money. Athletics cut more than $195,000 - a 12.6% reduction. Many others reduced spending by roughly 10-15 percent, either through attrition or other means.
