Cullerton: Senate May Take Override Vote on Union Legislation

budget collage

Senate President John Cullerton says his chamber will consider overriding some of Gov. Bruce Rauner's vetoes this week, including one blocking public-employee strikes and management lockouts.
Cullerton said Tuesday that senators will discuss it in caucus on Wednesday. The measure Rauner rejected would send contract-negotiation impasses to binding arbitration.

A House override will be far more difficult, but House Speaker Michael Madigan's spokesman has said representatives will consider it.

Cullerton testified Tuesday before a House panel in favor of legislation his chamber approved that freezes property taxes, revamps school funding and offers pension relief for Chicago schools.

Rauner on Monday proposed a more wide-ranging plan that included local control of collective bargaining.

Cullerton called Rauner's bill "unpassable'' and says the Senate bill is a compromise.
