COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Jackson county, especially among younger people.
Jackson County Health Department administrator Bart Hagston said younger people are social and may not take the virus as seriously, assuming they’ll have milder symptoms. But that isn’t necessarily the case.
“People in their teens and 20s can get symptoms and they can have severe health outcomes, especially if they have any kind of underlying health conditions, chronic health conditions,” Hagston said. “That’s the big issue with this disease is that sometimes there is no way to know how much it’s going to impact an individual until they come down with it.”
Diabetes and obesity are two common conditions that can worsen COVID-19.
Hagston said 50 percent of recent COVID-19 cases in the county were from people in their teens and 20s. He said people of all ages should continue to follow guidelines like social distancing and mask wearing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
