A staff member for Republican Congressman Rodney Davis’ campaign was arrested Wednesday night. He’s been charged with aggravated battery at a campaign event for Davis’ opponent. He was fired Thursday.
Springfield Police Lieutenant Brian Oakes says Levi Lovell — Davis’ field director — smelled of alcohol and either punched or elbowed someone at Betsy Dirsken-Londrigan’s campaign event.
Londrigan, the Democratic candidate, says political operatives affiliated with Davis’ campaign often attend her events, but they’ve never behaved like this.
“My husband was pushed. Some other people were hit. He was very aggressive with me and it was completely unnecessary.”
Londrigan says Lovell was out of line.
“I know as a candidate to expect a certain amount of tracking and things like that, and I understand that, but for him to go after my family is completely unacceptable.”
Londrigan says Davis called to personally apologize.
