City of Carbondale & Tourism Bureau to Enter New Agreement

WSIU Radio

The Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau is almost back in business.

The Carbondale City Council Tuesday night approved a plan to allow the city to enter into a temporary contract with the organization.   The 90-day plan will allow the bureau to re-open it’s door and serve the public. Roxanne Conley is the new president of the bureau’s board.   She says they understand the importance of being accountable and have divided into focus groups to get the organization back on track.

Under the expected contract, the city will provide 75-thousand dollars in funding.  The money will allow the convention and tourism bureau to qualify for another 60-thousand dollars in matching state money.  Connelly says they will be developing a welcome center and working on improving the bureau’s website. At the conclusion of the 90-day period, the CCTB will present the city with an agreement to provide tourism services through April of next year.   Earlier this year the city decided not to provide the bureau with more than 260-thosuand dollars in city funds because of concerns over how the bureau was operating and the level of service it was providing the city.  Late last month the CCTB agreed to reconstitute its board with new members appointed earlier this year by the City.

Connelly says they hope to make some strategic hires in the next few weeks that will be able to meet the immediate needs of the bureau.  The bureau will also conduct a search for a new executive director.
