Chancellor Montemagno Reacts to Proposed Fund Shift Within SIU System

In his blog, SIU-Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno discusses the impact of a proposed reallocation of funds between his campus and SIU-Edwardsville.

The plan would shift five million dollars from Carbondale to Edwardsville at the start of the new fiscal year.
Montemagno says that reduction would be equal to laying off as a many as 110 faculty and staff and remove over 39-million dollars from the local economy.

He says a multi-million dollar budget cut in a few months is the immediate concern because SIU-C has already reduced its budget by over 31-million dollars since 2014.

Montemagno says basing the proposal on enrollment does not account for the different missions of the two campuses since SIU-C is a doctoral research institution.

The chancellor says he has asked trustees to consider delaying potential changes to the funding formula until an external consultant conducts an impartial analysis.

SIU President Randy Dunn says he expects a consultant organization will help create a formula for fund distribution if this proposal moves forward.
