Cement Company Cancels Southern Illinois Expansion

Cement manufacturer Lafarge has announced they are no longer expanding operations at their plant in Massac County, Illinois.

The plan had been to add a third kiln at the Joppa Cement Plant which would have created around 50 new jobs.

Lafarge spokeswoman Robin DeCarlo says the company made the decision to cancel the expansion because it determined it could adequately operate on the two existing kilns.

The company previously closed the plant’s second kiln in 2012, but has since brought it back. The plant currently employs 89 people.
