Don Monty is officially Carbondale's acting mayor.
The retired city staffer and former City Council member took the Oath of Office Tuesday at City Hall. He'll serve the final 15 months of Joel Fritzler's term. Fritzler resigned to accept a job in Arizona. Monty has served under seven different mayors during his time in Carbondale. He says that experience will help now that he has the job. Monty says revitalizing the downtown area has long been a goal of city leaders. He says that remains a priority of his, along with developing the entire community.
As part of his swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning, Monty resigned his City Council seat. The City Council plans to appoint someone on February 25th. Applications are being accepted now. For more information, call the mayor's office or go online to explore-carbondale.com.
Monty says he hasn't decided whether to run for a full-term as mayor next year. He says this unusual situation leaves him with some interesting decisions to make about his political future.
