Carbondale Shooting Suspect Caught

Carbondale Police

A suspect wanted in connection with a Carbondale shooting is under arrest.Carbondale Police say 23 year old Maurice Cooper was arrested Wednesday evening at a house in Du Quoin.  With the assistance from Du Quoin Police, Illinois State Police, and the US Secret Service officer searched the residence in Du Quoin and located Cooper hiding in a closet.  Cooper was arrested without incident and is being held in the Jackson County Jail.

The shooting happened Tuesday night in Carbondale.  Officers say a man was shot in the area of East Chestnut Street at North Robert A. Stalls Avenue.  He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, and later to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment.  Cooper was identified as the suspect and a search was launched.  Police say the shooting was apparently the result of  a personal dispute between the victim and the suspect, who are acquaintances.   Cooper is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.
