Carbondale’s Schnucks grocery store is among the dozens affected by a credit card breach, and company leaders are urging customers to check their accounts and protect themselves against potential identity theft.
The breach was first reported to the chain a month ago, when customers started complaining of fraudulent purchases after shopping at a Schnucks store. After an investigation, the company found malware on their system that allowed someone on the outside to get card numbers and expiration dates.
The incidents happened between December of 2012 and March of 2013 in Carbondale and in Centralia, as well as more than 75 other stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
Company officials encourage customers to check their accounts, and also their credit record with a reputable agency, to make sure their information is safe.
