Carbondale Salon Using New Trends in Recycling

You hear about businesses going green to improve the environment.

One place you haven’t heard a lot about going green is the hair salon.

There's a salon in Carbondale that is part of a new program to change that.

E Claire Salon in Carbondale has partnered with a new program called Green Circle Salons, whose mission is to make the North American salon industry sustainable by 2020.

We've cut our waste down by 97% in our salon we take like one bag of trash out probably about every 3 to 4 days.- Elizabeth Strusz, Owner E Claire Salon

Owner and stylist Elizabeth Strusz says she’s already seeing a difference.

“We’ve cut our waste down by 97% in our salon we take like one bag of trash out probably about every 3 to 4 days.”

Those shampoo bottles will be re-used to make play ground equipment, paper products will be re-cycled, foil and color tubes will be re-claimed and used to make new color tubes, and for all of that hair left on the floor…

“With the hair they actually create mats for oil spills, they create a great big mat and throw it in the water and the hair actually absorbs the oil.“

Strusz says it’s nice to work with a program that benefits the environment in more than one way.

“We don’t have any chemicals going down the drains, we don’t have any foils with chemicals on them into the landfills and it’s a wonderful program to get us out of throwing everything into dumpsters.”

The salon is not the only one recycling; Redken is one of the products they sell and use, they’re also jumping on board.

“If you notice all of their boxes will now say sustainable only so their using recycled materials now.”

Demonstrating how a partnership works when everyone has the same goal.

“Between our recycling we do in house, the stuff we’re buying from our Redken line we’re able to kind of keep this circle going and keep our eco-friendly footprint as little as possible.”

The customers can get the spa treatment they want and not worry about the environmental waste that typically is associated with a day at the salon.

“And that’s what we started creating the spa and salon with is just keeping our eco footprint down and making sure what your putting on you is also eco friendly as possible and as natural as possible.”
