Carbondale Police Department Honors Fallen Officers

The Carbondale Police Department honored fallen officers Friday.

The department hopes the ceremony will become an annual remembrance. Police Chief Jody O'Guinn says the department wants to build a memorial on the southwest corner of the city's public safety center.

The memorial honored Carbondale police officer Leonard Sizemore who died in 1933, and remains the only Carbondale Police officer to die in the line of duty.  Illinois Central Railroad officer Roy Zearfoss was also remembered.  He was shot and killed in Carbondale in 1936 while attempting to arrest a group of criminals trying to hop a train.

Retired Carbondale Police Lt. Paul Echols shared the stories of the slain officers. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial lists more than 19-thousand police officers killed in the line of duty.
