The Carbondale Park District is looking at ways to get the popular LIFE Community Center back in shape. Park District Executive Director Kathy Renfro says last March, when the pandemic forced the building to close, a mold issue was discovered.
"So the first action we took was to do a mold remediation in that building. It was about a 99-hundred dollar investment for the District, well worth it."
Soon other problems were discovered, adding to the cost to fix the building. The District and it's board are now considering whether to pay for all of the fixes needed, or, build a new community center.
"We do our level best to be good stewards of the taxpayer money, and so that's what we're trying to investigate now."
Renfro says a final decision could be made in March or April.
Renfro stresses the Life Center is open from Noon to 7 and in the morning by appointments.
