A Carbondale man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a weapons possession charge.
The Jackson County State's Attorney says 24-year-old Nanshon Gibbs received a two-year sentence for Unlawful Possession of Weapons by a Felon.Last October, Carbondale Police officers pulled over a vehicle for expired registration. Gibbs was seated in the front passenger seat.
Officers smelled the odor of cannabis inside the vehicle. A search of the car revealed a small bag in the glove compartment that contained a full-sized Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun with a fully loaded magazine. Gibbs admitted to possessing the gun, saying he found it by a dumpster. Gibbs is a felon and prohibited from possessing handguns.
