Carbondale to Break Ground on New Fire Station

The City of Carbondale will break ground Friday on a new fire station for the west side of town.

The $31-Million facility will be located in the 400 block of North Glenview Drive just off of Main Street.   Mayor Joel Fritzler says the new station will be a 12,400 square foot single-story brick building similar in design to the Carbondale Civic Center and the new Public Safety Center.  He says it is designed to meet the present and future needs of the Fire Department with four apparatus bays, seven bunk rooms, living and kitchen space, a workout room, a training room and office space for the Assistant Fire Chiefs and Training Officer.

Carbondale will also relocate its Emergency Operations Center and Storm Watch Center from City Hall to the  new fire station.  Fritzler says the building has been designed to be energy efficient and meets or exceeds all relevant energy codes as well as seismic standards.  The new station replaces the current west side station at the corner of Oakland Avenue and West Walnut Street, which has been in operation for more than 50 years.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.  Construction is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2013.
