Cambria's village board has approved a controversial tax increment financing district - despite vocal opposition from numerous groups.
The district, known as a TIF, would freeze property tax rates for homes throughout the community.
Supporters say it'll encourage new development and help the village improve infrastructure and other needs. But opponents - including the Carterville School District - say it'll have a negative effect on other taxing bodies, creating increased pressure on budgets that are already stretched thin.
Carterville's School District includes Cambria. The school board voted last night to approve potential legal action if the TIF proposition passed.
