The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal shooting near Carbondale on New Year's Day.
Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a 911 call at a residence south of Carbondale. They were told two men forced their way into the residence and demanded money. A struggle ensued over a firearm and shots were fired.
About ten minutes later, Carbondale Police were alerted to a teenager who arrived at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale with a life threatening injury. The 17-year-old later died from a suspected gunshot wound. It's believed the two calls are related.
The investigation into the incident continues.
