AP: Comptroller Employees Did Rauner Hiring Work

Employees for Illinois' comptroller who began hiring work for Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration last fall kept up the practice three months into the Republican's tenure.

The Associated Press obtained documents showing state workers arranged hiring with Cabinet-level agencies as part of Rauner's transition while on the comptroller's clock. It began in December 2014 and continued until last April, when the leader of the effort joined Rauner's staff.

Political experts say the setup was improper if not illegal. The comptroller's duties do not include hiring for the governor.

Brad Hahn is chief of staff to GOP Comptroller Leslie Munger. He says Munger allowed the process begun by her late predecessor to continue because it was pre-approved by an independent inspector general.

Another of the employees involved also took a high-paying Rauner administration job.
