police

A five-year-old boy was killed in Carbondale Monday night after being hit by a vehicle.

Carbondale Police say the incident occurred around 8 p.m. in the 500 block of North Wall Street.
Officers say the driver attempted to swerve to avoid the child, but was unable to do so. After striking the child, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and came to rest west of the roadway.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner's Office. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.

The investigation into this incident is continuing.
