Illinois children with epilepsy and other seizure disorders will be able to use medical marijuana products, under a new law in the New Year.
The ingredient which is touted as being helpful in these cases is CBD, which is said to have the opposite effect of THC, the chemical in pot which provides recreational users their “high.”
“This specific exception was carved out in the law to allow children to access this non-psychoactive product which has had some success,” says Morgan Fox, spokesman for the Washington-based Marijuana Policy Project, noting the original law, which took effect a year ago, does not name epilepsy as a qualifying illness.
The bar for kids’ prescriptions is set higher than in the adult law in that there will have to be two doctors’ certifications.
