DJ Sweets

Host Wendell Hughes, a.k.a. DJ Sweets, is the host of Magic Soul on WSIU Radio on Sundays at 9pm. The  one-hour program showcases the best of Soul, R&B, Smooth Jazz, Blues, and Neo-Soul. Hughes, a student in Radio-Television at SIU Carbondale, says he grew up on this kind of music and has always found it inspirational.  He also thinks it's important to bring more diverse voices to the region. "I feel [a show with a strong ethnic influence] was something WSIU needed," he says. Hughes hopes to appeal to a broad audience across all backgrounds, along with older African-Americans and other minority groups.

Listeners should expect a soulful experience featuring artists like James Brown, Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Wonder. Hughes also plans to include music from local artists.
