The Carbondale City Council will decide if they will adopt the city’s Sustainability Action Plan at their regular meeting Tuesday night.

The Carbondale Sustainability Committee began crafting the Carbondale Sustainability Action Plan in early 2019.

The plan provides a pathway for the city to follow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while increasing environmental and human health.

The committee gathered input through surveys, community conversations and collaborations with community stakeholders to shape the plan.

Carbondale Sustainability Commissioner Saxon Metzger says they inventoried the city’s emissions release to have a starting point to determine the city’s reduction.

“All of its energy usage, transportation usage to create kind of a baseline to compare to, so we could have public comment driven, data backed scientific efforts to make Carbondale more resilient and more sustainable in the future.”

The city has already taken some steps toward sustainability by installing solar panels on municipal buildings, adding electric vehicles to the city’s fleet and switching to LED lighting.
