Images

The city of Murphysboro has join the city of Marion in prohibiting the sale of recreational marijuana.

The Murphysboro City Council voted 6-to-5 Tuesday to oppose the sale of recreational cannabis within the city limits.  Mayor Will Stephens was the tiebreaking vote.
Murphysboro may put an advisory question on the spring ballot next year.   The City of Marion voted down a similar ordinance on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Williamson County Board unanimously approved the sale of recreational marijuana within the county during its meeting yesterday.  The ordinance allows the sale in the unincorporated areas of the county - not governed by other municipalities.  The county also voted to impose a 3.75-percent sales tax on cannabis sales.

Illinois' new law permitting recreational use of cannabis takes effect January first.  Illinois is the 11th state in the country to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.
