US Senator Dick Durbin is calling for the Director of the Bureau of Prisons to be replaced.
In 2020 Michael Carvajal was appointed Director of the Bureau of Prisons.
A recent report from the Department of Justice revealed the BOP failed to negotiate with the prison guard union on fully enforcing the First Step Act for more than 20 months.
That delay is preventing 30 new policies being implemented to protect staff and inmates.
US Senator Dick Durbin is calling on Attorney General Garland to remove Carvajal from the Director position.
Senator Durbin says part of the First Step Act lets low risk inmates earn time credit to reduce their sentence by completing programs to prevent them from committing crime once released.
“The inspector general concluded that the Bureau of Prisons has not allowed any time credits to be awarded because they have not finalized the policy nearly three years after the first step act was signed into law.”
The First Step Act reforms federal prisons and sentencing to reduce recidivism and inmate population.
