National conversations about policing and justice reform are prompting a virtual event this week for southern Illinois.

The Zoom discussion will feature Jackson County State’s Attorney Joe Cervantes and Carbondale Interim Police Chief Stan Reno. Reno said the goal is to have conversation about community concerns.

“It’s really just an opportunity to have an open forum with community members, for them to ask questions about things happening in the community, what’s happening the police department,” he explained. “An opportunity for me and the state’s attorney to talk about some of the initiatives and efforts we’re working on for community outreach and really just have an open opportunity for people to talk to us.”

The event is being hosted by Carbondale United and the Southern Illinois Unity Coalition. The Zoom conversation will take place on Thursday, January 28 at 5:30 pm and registration is available on the Carbondale Public library’s website.
