Fatal Crash in Washington County

Sign

One man was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning in Washington County.

Illinois State Police say 35-year-old Matthew McKinley of Coulterville died in the accident, while 40-year-old Michael Barfield, Jr. of Nashville suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a regional hospital.
Troopers say their preliminary investigation indicates McKinley was west bound and Barfield was east bound on Illinois Route 15 near the intersection with Liberty Church Road at around 6 a.m. They say for some reason, McKinley's vehicle crossed the centerline and hit Barfield's vehicle head-on.

McKinley was ejected and pronounced dead on scene. Barfield had to be extricated from his vehicle.

Illinois Route 15 was closed for nearly five hours so a crew could clean up the accident scene.
