Another week of declines in COVID numbers - and Illinois leaders say they're more confident the state has passed the Omicron peak.

The weekly update shows new cases were cut in half - from 123,000 new cases last week to 60,000 this week. Hospitalizations dropped by 1,400 patients, too - to 3,135.

Still, new cases are still high. In southern Illinois, nearly 6,400 new cases were reported, along with 42 new deaths. More than 2,000 people have died of COVID-related illness since the pandemic began.

SIU's active case count this week is 111- 80 students and 31 faculty and staff members. Twenty-four students are in isolation housing.

Congregate care facilities and prisons are still dealing with outbreaks, too. More than 950 new cases were reported in southern Illinois prisons. Choate Mental Health Center, the Murray Center in Centralia, and Chester Psychiatric Hospital all saw increases in cases.
