Southern Illinois University is adding some flexibility to its Spring 2022 restart plan - as COVID cases spike across the region and around the country.

In a message to campus on Thursday, administrators thanked the faculty, staff, and students who had already complied with a mandatory testing policy - though thousands of people in the campus community still will have to be tested as classes start next week.

Because of that, Chancellor Austin Lane says classes will be allowed to meet online for the first week of the semester - and a list of online classes is available at SIU's coronavirus information page.

Faculty and some student leaders had expressed the need to start the semester online, in an effort to keep people healthy. SIU's administration says it'll continue to monitor positivity rates and other data and make changes when necessary.
