Next month SIU’s Touch of Nature is hosting two intensive wilderness medical training workshops.
In January Colorado Outside will offer courses on wilderness medical training at Touch of Nature.
First is a week-long in-depth wilderness first responder certification course followed by a two-day recertification course.
The program trains participants to handle emergencies in remote environments with limited resources and equipment.
Topics include patient assessment, wilderness rescue, environmental medicine and more.
Course instructor Darren Stokes says this course focuses on critical thinking and decision making.
“We identify whether those medical injuries are high risk or low risk to determine the appropriate course of action, the appropriate evacuation, all of the medical interventions are going to be standard for any medical environment.”
The course is designed to manage medical problems in isolated environments for days to weeks if needed.
