Blood donations drop during the summer months, but need increases.

The Red Cross is holding blood drives across the region this summer.

The agency is looking for donors as blood donations typically drop during the summer months as people are busy with vacations and travel. Red Cross Regional Communications Director Sharon Watson said that while donations may fall, the need for blood doesn't.

“Plus we have an increase in demand, generally, during the summer because unfortunately there's an increase in accidents, whether car accidents or boating accidents or other activity items that result in, unfortunately, situations where blood is needed,” she said.

While the Red Cross holds regular blood drives, anyone who wants to donate can also visit their website to find a local donation site and make an individual appointment. Upcoming blood drives in the WSIU listening area are listed below.
