Cold and flu season is here, but consumers should be aware of potential risk when taking over-the-counter medications.
While cold and flu medications are generally safe, they can interact with common prescription drugs. Shawnna Rhine, outreach coordinator with the Southern Seven Health Department, said many patients aren’t aware of the potential risks.
“We’re just encouraging anyone who is taking a medication that is an ongoing medication, maybe you’re taking it for high blood pressure, you’re taking it for, again, an anti-depressant, anything of that nature, it’s important to check with your doctor to make sure what you’re taking is not going to be counterproductive for you,” Rhine said.
Pharmacists can also answer questions about medication interactions and help.
