The school was scored on four different areas of health equity.

SIU’s Student Health Services is getting national recognition as a leader in LGBTQ Health Equity.

Director of Wellness Morrison said the school has been working toward this for more than 2 years. SIU was scored on non-discrimination and staff training, student support, employee benefits and polices, and patient and community engagement.

Morrison said their goal is to be able to provide affirming and inclusive care for all students and make visiting Health Services a positive experience.

“Being referred to by the correct name and pronouns is something that we’ve been working on,” Morrison said. “We are also offered free training for completing this index, through the Human Rights Campaign, they provide us with training.”

Health Services has also hired an LGBTQ patient advocate. Morrison said Health Services will be introducing a website with resources for LGBTQ students in the coming months.
