Ameren Illinois has some big projects starting this spring in Williamson and Jackson County.

In April Ameren Illinois will begin the process of replacing seven miles of natural gas transmission pipeline from Johnston City to Marion.

New 10-inch corrosion resistant pipes are replacing the current pipes that were installed in the 1960’s.

Communications Executive Brian Bretsch says these new pipes will last for decades.

“Part of our overall project with the transmission pipelines is to help with the safety and integrity of our transmission system. We are going along and we are replacing some of this stuff from the fifties sixties that we're replacing it with new steel pipelines.”

In Carbondale, Ameren will replace seven more miles of neighborhood distribution pipes to customers south of East Walnut St to E. Grand Ave. between Oakland and Wall St.
